I. Mệnh đề quan hệ là dạng mệnh đề thường được dùng khi cần kết hợp 2 câu đơn cùng nói về một đối tượng nào đó.

Các loại mệnh đề quan hệ:

1. Mệnh đề quan hệ xác định: xác định, làm rõ danh từ mà đại từ quan hệ thay thế.

E.g.: The boy whom you met yesterday is my son. 

2. Mệnh đề quan hệ không xác định: cung cấp thêm thông tin về danh từ mà đại từ quan hệ thay thế, được ngăn cách với mệnh đề chính bằng các dấu phẩy trước và sau mệnh đề.

E.g.: I was born in Hanoi, which is the capital of Vietnam.

- Chỉ sở hữu cho người/ vật

- Làm tính từ sở hữu trước danh từ trong MĐQH

- Thay thế cho danh từ chỉ người

- Làm tân ngữ trong MĐQH

I was invited by the professor whom I met at the conference.

- Thay thế danh từ chỉ người (= who)/ chỉ vật (= which)

- Làm chủ ngữ/tân ngữ trong MĐQH (chỉ dùng trong MĐQH xác định)
