Valentine's Day is celebrated every year on 14 February. It's the day people show their affection for another person or people by sending cards, flowers or chocolates with messages of love.
The day gets its name from a famous saint named Valentine, who is believed to be a priest from Rome in the third century AD when Emperor Claudius II had banned marriage because he thought married men were bad soldiers. , Valentine felt this was unfair, so he broke the rules and arranged marriages in . When Claudius found out, Valentine was thrown in jail and to death. There, he fell in love with the jailer's daughter and when he was taken to be killed on 14 February he sent her a love letter signed "from your Valentine".
It's thought that as part of the celebrations, boys drew names of girls from a box. They'd be boyfriend and girlfriend during the festival and sometimes they'd get married. Later on, the church wanted to turn this festival into a Christian celebration and decided to use it to remember St Valentine, too. Gradually, St Valentine's name started to be used by people to their feelings to those they loved.

Read the following passage and choose the correct answer to each of the questions.

According to airline industry statistics, almost 90% of airline accidents are survivable or partially survivable. But passengers can increase their chances of survival by learning and following certain tips. Experts say that you should read and listen to safety instructions before take-off and ask questions if you have uncertainties. You should fasten your seat belt low on your hips and as tightly as possible. Of course, you should also know how the release mechanism of your belt operates. During take-offs and landings, you are advised to keep your feet flat on the floor. Before take-off, you should locate the nearest exit and an alternative exit and count the rows of seats between you and the exits so that you can find them in the dark if necessary

In the event that you are forewarned of a possible accident, you should put your hands on your ankles and keep your head down until the plane comes to a complete stop. If smoke is present in the cabin, you should keep your head low and cover your face with napkin, towels or clothing. If possible, wet these for added protection against smoke inhalation. To evacuate as quickly as possible, follow crew commands and do not take personal belongings with you. Do not jump on escape slides before they’re fully inflated, and when you jump, do so with your arms and legs extended in front of you. When you get to the ground, you should move away from the plane as quickly as possible, and never smoke near the wreckage.

Read the following passage and choose the correct answers.

In the event of long-term school closures from the coronavirus, a piece of advice is given for parents and schools on how to prepare: use remote learning.

Unfortunately, it’s not that simple. In fact, remote learning may be impossible for many schools to offer students on such short notice.

Not all students have access to technology.

While 58% of American schools are reported to have  1:1 computer program, not all schools assign a computer to each student during the school day, nor do they all allow students to bring the devices home with them.

25% of students don’t have access to computers at home, either. Internet access is also a problem, with higher-income families six times more likely than low-income families to have high-speed internet.

Cell phones are not the answer.

It is true that most students have cell phones. But have you ever tried to actually type an essay on one? Many students do, but with a lower quality of work. Moreover, multi-tasking by opening several tabs is often required for an assignment, and this is not easy to do on a cellphone.

Reading complex information requires focus, and when using a cell phone, students can be easily interrupted by calls, texts, and notifications. The time and effort of doing academic work on a handheld device is a recipe for frustration.

It takes time and training to develop an online class.

Some teachers use flipped classrooms, where students watch videos at home and practice skills during class time, and those classes may be the most effective in terms of accommodating students should their schools close.

Unfortunately, that’s the norm. Most teachers still use the traditional “face to face” model. Developing an online course is time-intensive and requires training that most teachers have not had.

We need to be realistic.

Even though much is still unknown about the coronavirus, students and schools must be prepared. Parents, administrators, and teachers need to have realistic expectations about what our students can accomplish while at home and away from school. We need to all be on the same page to reduce anxiety for students and families during this stressful, challenging crisis.
