What makes a best friend?

This is what some of our readers said ...

Katie: My name's Katie and I'm from New York. My best friend is in my class, so I see her every day. It's not a problem because we never argue! I like her because she's interesting and she always listens to me. I always tell her my secrets and other personal information and I know she doesn't tell other people.

Sarah: I'm Sarah and I'm from London. My best friend lives on the other side of town, so we don't meet often. She isn't perfect because she doesn't always listen to me. She can also be a bit boring because she doesn't like going out. I usually go to her house on Saturdays and sometimes stay until Sunday. She's funny though and we have a lot in common. For a start, we like the same singers and bands.

Mandisa: I'm Mandisa and I'm from Cape Town in South Africa. I've got a really special best friend. We go to the same basketball club, that's how I know him. He's friendly and knows a lot of people, but he's really kind and always has time for me. He's also very clever and often comes round to my house and helps me with my maths.

Sophia Capaldi - Young Businesswoman of the Year

Sophia Capaldi has just won the Young Businesswoman of the Year competition. She is the youngest woman to have ever won it. She comes from quite a poor family and when she was a child her parents couldn't buy her things that her friends had. That is when Sophia started to look on eBay and in shops that sell used or second-hand things at very low prices.

Sophia soon thought that she could buy things very cheaply and sell them again at a higher price. "It started as a hobby," she said. "But then I quickly started to make money and I spent more time buying and selling things until I started to earn a lot of money."

She had always planned to go to university but she was making so much money that she soon changed her plans. She preferred not to spend three years studying to get a good job because she was already earning a lot of money. "I think university life would be fun but I believe there will be enough time for me to have fun in the future," she said.

When she won the competition, she couldn't believe it. She hadn't even heard of the competition before. She was very happy and she felt that she had done something that none of her friends had ever done.

Now she is planning to find one or two people to work for her in the next few weeks as there is too much for her to do on her own. Also, she thinks it will be good to have some company during the day in the office because it can be a bit boring being her own boss.

The Tasmanian devil

The Tasmanian devil is an unusual animal found only on the island of Tasmania in the southeast of Australia. people know the devil from the popular cartoon character, Taz, but this little animal is in fact a real animal. What does a real devil look ? lt is the size of a small black dog and just as cute. don't let its size fool you. The devil can bite! In the wild, it is a carnivore, which means it eat other animals. lt does not often kill the animals it eats though. Rather, it eats animals that have died from some other cause.

Like many other Australian animals, these little black animals are marsupials. This means that like kangaroos, for example, they carry their babies in a pouch. Surprisingly, the mother devil look after four little babies at a time!

For each question, write the correct answer. Write ONE word for each gap.

Hi David,

I (0) hope you're well. It's my brother Tom's birthday month, and I don't know to buy him for a present. Have you got ideas? He's the same age you and likes the same kind of things.

Thanks,
Jenny

Hi Jenny,

I think I can help you! Why not get Tom a book? I've just read Dragon Teeth, which was written Michael Crichton. He's such a fantastic author! I loved it, and I think brother would like it too.
