Hi Mary,
We're having a great time here in India. Peter and James are making a documentary about the Khasi people. They're a tribe in the hills of mountains. They are short and strong people with black hair and they wear long colorful clothes. I spend my days going to museums and visiting the local markets. Right now I'm eating some delicious traditional food at a cafe and I'm waiting for the rain to stop. The weather is strange here. It rains a lot every day but it's warm. Can't wait to tell you all about our trip.
Take care!
Sue

Ruler Changes Size
What you'll need:
- Tall empty clear glass
- Water
- Cooking Oil
- Rubbing Alcohol
- Ruler
How to make:
Step 1 – Pour water into a tall clear glass. Fill it about 1/3 of the way full.
Step 2 – Next, carefully pour in cooking oil into the glass until the glass is a little less than 2/3 of the way full.
Step 3 – Slowly pour rubbing alcohol into the glass until the glass is almost full of liquid.
Step 4 – Wait for about 30 seconds to allow the liquids to settle. You will notice three layers of liquid, first water at the bottom, then cooking oil in the middle and finally rubbing alcohol at the top.
Step 5 – As you observe the ruler in the glass, first notice that the ruler appears to get wider as soon as it enters the liquid within the glass cup. Immediately remove the ruler from the liquid to show that it really isn’t wider, it just appears to be when observed in the liquid.
Next, place the ruler back into the liquid and look very closely through the side of the cup. As you look closer, you will notice that the width of the ruler appears to change depending on the liquid it is in.
Which is NOT referred to in the materials you need?
After pouring water into 1/3 of the glass, _____.
What can we learn from the shape of the ruler in 3 different liquids?

Ben's Loose Tooth
"I’m always last," Ben sighed. "Last to learn to whistle. Last to lose a tooth."
Ben's older sister, Kate, was always bossy. "Jiggle your teeth," she said. "Find one that’s wiggly and wobbly."
Tooth by tooth, Ben jiggled. He wriggled the last tooth. "It’s wiggly. It’s wobbly!"
"Tug it," Kate said.
"Uh!” Ben mumbled. “It’s stuck in my gums."
"Hmmm.” Kate scrunched her nose. "Munch that apple."
Ben took a bite. "Ouch! No luck."
"Hmmm," said Kate. She tapped her pinky against her chin. I'll scare it out of you! That's how you get rid of hiccups. Maybe it works for teeth too."
Ben squeezed his eyes out. He held his breath. He waited and waited. 'Hey! When are you going to scare me?" He propped one eye open.
"How scary would it be if I told you?" Kate asked.
"Well—,” Ben said.
"Boo!" cried Kate. She flapped her arms.
Ben's fingers flew to the tooth. He wriggled it. He jiggled it. “Blah! I’ll never lose a tooth."
He hung his head. "I’ll never learn to whistle, either."
"Whistle? I can teach you!” Kate said. “Pucker your lips. Leave a tiny space."
Ben scrunched his lips together.
“Perfect.” Kate smiled. “Now, shoot the air out. Hard.”
With all his might, Ben blasted air. Out burst a high note—with his tooth!

The Strange Star
Rosie loved watching the night sky. It shined with so many stars.
Sometimes, she would climb onto Papa's shoulders. She'd feel like a princess, sitting closer to those stars.
One afternoon. Papa said. "We're going to the beach! Won't that be fun?
Rosie wasn't sure. "Will my stars be merry too?" "Maybe," Papa said.
So they went to the beach. But it was foggy that night - no stars in sight.
"Let's see what happens tomorrow," Papa said.
"Okay..." Rosie frowned.
The next morning, they went back to the beach and Rosie gathered seashells. Rosie found something strange. It looked like a big, orange, bumpy star. Had it fallen from the sky? And why wasn't it glowing? "It's not a star." Papa smiled. "It's a starfish. It lives in the ocean."
Rosie put the starfish in the ocean. They watched the waves wash it back home. Then Rosie looked for more starfish. She liked the stars and starfish.

The Perfect Camping Trip
One Saturday evening, Bella and her friend Mia went camping. Mosquitoes snapped at them in the dewy air. Tall pine trees rustled in the soft wind and sprinkled down pine needles.
“It’s like camping in the woods,” Mia said. They were in Bella’s back yard.
“Let’s pitch our tent.” Bella flung a sheet over two drooping branches on side-by-side trees. It was perfect! They laughed and crawled under the sheet. But the wind grew stronger. The sheet flapped over and off the tree. They tried again, but the sheet wouldn’t stay.
“Hmm,” Mia said. “Let’s roast marshmallows instead.”
They hunted for sticks and broken pieces of bark. They made a pile on the ground, poking long sticks through their marshmallows. It was perfect!
Bella ran inside to ask Mom to start the campfire. But Mom said, “No, we can’t start a campfire in our backyard. You or someone else could get hurt. Just pretend. Or you can use the microwave.”
They pretended but it wasn’t the same. And their marshmallows got dirt all over them.
“Hmm,” Bella said. “Let’s sit and look at the stars instead.”
But when they looked up, Bella saw a black sky without any glowing stars. The moon was hazy and striped with tentacle-like clouds.
“The sky looks spooky,” Mia said.
“It does look spooky,” Bella smiled.
They told each other spooky ghost stories. It was perfect!
Then, Bella felt a drop. And another. And another. Bella and Mia raced inside out of the rain.
Their camping trip was ruined! Bella frowned. Or was it? She remembered they could make S’mores in the microwave!
Bella and Mia devoured their graham cracker, chocolate, and marshmallow, S'more sandwiches. Who knew s’mores could be so good without ashes and smoke?
Mom pulled two sleeping bags into Bella’s bedroom. Bella and Mia snuggled deep down in them, staring up at the glowing sticker stars on Bella’s bedroom ceiling.
“This is the best camping trip ever,” Mia said.
“Let’s do it again next weekend!” Bella smile.
