Read the following story.

Charles and Pam received two brochures in the mail. One was for a summer music camp in Australia and the other was for an art camp in Italy. They thought it would be a great idea for their twin daughters, Lauren and Karen, to go to two different camps this year. The girls had never been apart from each other. They did everything together. Charles and Pam thought that living in different places for the summer would teach the twins how to live and solve their problems individually.

Later that night, Charles and Pam showed the girls the brochures. Even though the girls thought the camps looked like a lot of fun, they didn’t want to be separated
“What if I need Lauren?’’ Karen asked.
“What if I need Karen?’’ Lauren cried.

Their mother put her arms around both of them. “You girls will always have each other. You’ll always be twins,” Pam said. “But you’re two separate people. You can’t always do everything together.”
Lauren, you want to be a painter,” said Charles. “And Karen, you want to be a pianist. This is the perfect chance to do what you love for the entire summer!”

“So...” Pam said. “What’s your decision?"

The girls looked at each other in the eye and nodded. They both knew what to tell their parents.

Hi Fiona,

It's great to hear from you. Sorry, it took me a while to get back to you but I've been busy with end-of-term exams. Anyway, thanks so much for the invitation. I'd love to come.
The science camp sounds like a lot of fun. As you know, I love science, so it'll be great to do experiments at the camp and brush up on my English! We can even build our own robot. I've got a few questions about the camp, though. Where are we going to sleep? Also, is the camp going to provide us with our meals? Are they organising any trips to museums? How much will it cost? Let me know.
Thanks again for inviting me to the camp. I'm really looking forward to it. Have to go now!

Write back,

Brenda

Read the passage below and choose the best answer.

When I injured my back I had to take a break from my running career. I decided to introduce more women to the sport, to show them how much fun it can be and to give them the confidence to get out and run. I decided to start a running club for women in my area because I was annoyed by the attitude of many race organizers. They complain about the lack of women in the sport but also use this as an excuse for not providing separate changing facilities.

I put up posters and 40 women, young and old, fit and unfit, joined. All of them were attracted by the idea of losing weight but I don’t think they had really thought about running before. When or if they did, they had a picture of painful training. They didn’t think of chatting and smiling while running in beautiful places, like by a river.

At first, they ran for only a minute – now they can run for thirty minutes. They’ve also learned from other runners about diet and keeping fit in general. I want to do something for women’s running and I have had so much pleasure watching their progress – almost as much as they’ve had themselves.

What is the writer’s main aim in writing the text?

  • to describe her own running career
  • to complain about race organizers
  • to talk about women runners
  • to describe a good running method

What would a reader find out from the text?

  • the best kind of places for running
  • how runners can avoid injuring themselves
  • the progress made by the women in the club
  • the teaching skills of the writer

What is the writer’s opinion of the runners she trained?

  • They were too serious
  • They needed encouraging
  • They couldn’t develop their skills
  • They were difficult to train

Why did the women join the running club?

  • to have a good time
  • to meet other people
  • to help them lose weight
  • to become top runners

Which of the following would be the best title for the club poster?

  • Discover the Pleasures of Running
  • Riverside Running Club for Women
  • Athletics Competition: How to Win
  • Keep Fit by Training Hard
