INTEGRATING PUBLIC AND ONLINE SPACES

COVID-19 has forced us into social distancing, isolation, and quarantine. These conditions are fostering  anxiety and loneliness in our cities. However, COVID-19 is an opportunity to build on  we know and to learn from this situation. It's possible to promote social and emotional well-being. Integrating public and online spaces is one of approaches for building better communities. Our new online communication skills can help us develop a better physical-digital interface for bringing people together. Video conferencing is flexible and can enable long-distance connections and "work from home" hubs. , social media platforms, such as Facebook, Meetup, WhatsApp or art-based apps like Somebody, are for organizing physical meetings. These can help with community volunteering, socializing, or simply sharing guerrilla-garden herbs for local cooking. A better physical-digital interface could help new jobs flourish in "interactive" creative industries that virtually connect  isolated individual. New art spaces could be established, putting connective digital infrastructure, such as audio-visual platforms, within physical spaces to help face-to-face and virtual audiences interact.

Read the following passage then choose the best answer to each question below.

The benefits of music for academic learning are well documented, thanks to research following young people's progress as they learn an instrument. Evidence is also increasing that studying music leads to actual physical changes in one's brain development. Significantly, learning and playing music alter the amount of activity in certain regions of the brain, as well as the structure of specific areas.

One
study at the University of Munster in Germany monitored the brain activity of two groups of people between 20 and 30 years of age. One group consisted of 20 musicians who had played music for at least 15 years. The other group consisted of 13 non-musicians. Each participant listened to a recording of piano music as the researchers watched their brain responses. While listening to the recording, the musicians showed 25% more activity in the area of the brain that processes auditory signals. Although the music was from a piano, the response level was higher for all musicians, whether they played the piano, violin, or another instrument.

A separate study at McMaster University in Canada followed the progress of 12 children for a year. Six of the children were taught music using the Suzuki method, a popular teaching method from Japan. The others did not learn an instrument. Over the course of the study, the researchers took regular measurements of certain brain regions. They found that the music students had increased activity in the region of the brain responsible for focusing attention and making sense of different sounds.
The word "their" in the second paragraph refers to _____.
  • participants and researchers'
  • the other group's
  • one group's

  • All participants in the study at Munster University were experienced in music.
  • Learning and playing music significantly alters the amount of activity in certain regions of the brain.
  • Only if the musicians play the piano will the brain process auditory signals.
According to the passage, physical changes in the brain development occurred _____.
  • only when participants listened to the music from a piano
  • while non-musicians were listening to a recording of any instruments
  • with a higher response level if musicians listened to the piano
  • with musicians who started to play music when they were 15 years old

Read the following passage then choose the best answer to each question below.

What if you were stuck in traffic and suddenly the lights changed and cars began moving while your own vehicle notified you of an available parking space nearby? You scan your phone, which contains both your license and ID, to the available parking space machine and you are just in time for work. You can also plug your electric car to recharge, free of charge! It's all possible and happening today and is just a small example of what can be achieved in a smart city. Urbanization is a trend with no end. It is estimated that up to 66% of all people will live in cities by 2050. At the forefront of potential problems that this may cause are environmental, social, and economic sustainability. The smart city is one solution.

A smart city is a framework that is mostly composed of communication technologies that allow an ecosystem of connected devices to improve our daily lives. These devices can be, for example, your car, phone, or home. Integrating these sorts of things with a city's infrastructure can lead to improved energy distribution and rubbish collection decreased traffic congestion and the seamless transfer of payments and data from something as small as your key fob or smart-phone.

Wireless connectivity is changing the way we see and control traditional elements in our daily city lives. Streetlights with sensors are able to detect available parking spaces and alert drivers where they cannot only park their cars but charge them as well. They can also turn themselves off, saving energy, and turn back on when it senses a car or person in close proximity. High-powered LEDs can alert commuters of traffic congestion and re-route them and, at the same time, provide severe weather warnings. Rubbish bins can send data to the waste management authorities, alerting them to pick up the bins when they are close to full, rather than the inefficient method of a weekly schedule, which may or may not be needed at all.

To manage the increased population of cities, there is a need to have more sustainable, environmentally, and economically friendly smarter cities and technologies. The above-mentioned are the few, with more applications and products to be showcased in the recent future.
The word "They" in paragraph 3 refers to _____.
