Spoilt for Choice

Some research which was recently carried out in Britain has confirmed what many ordinary shoppers have suspected for quite a long time. Having a selection of goods to choose from is not necessarily a benefit to consumers. The average supermarket in Britain has around 40,000 different products on sale at any one time and if you’re of buying a car, then there are actually around 1,600 different models on the market.
In one sense, choice is a good thing because it allows us to buy those products best suit our needs. But choice can also represent something of a problem. With over 400 brands of shampoo on the market, how does the consumer get hold of the information necessary to choose between them?
For some people, the solution is to buy only well-known brands, whilst others are happy to be persuaded by advertising. There is evidence, , that for some people the amount of choice available to them in Britain’s consumer society is actually a source of anxiety and stress. One man interviewed by the researchers admitted that he had to buy his girlfriend a mobile phone for her birthday, but was so confused by the number of different types on offer in the shop that he gave up and decided to buy her a bunch of flowers instead!

Read the following passage then choose the best answer to each question below.

A massage is relaxing, and makes you feel great, but did you know that it's also good for you? That's what doctors are now saying. Massage relieves pain and anxiety, eases depression, and speeds up recovery from medical problems.

Research has shown that people of all ages benefit from touch. Premature infants who are held develop faster than those left alone, and healthy babies who get a lot of physical contact cry less and sleep better. Researchers are not sure why this occurs but they have also found out that touch can slow heart rate, lower blood pressure and increase levels of serotonin, the brain chemical that is linked to well-being. It also decreases levels of the stress hormone cortisol, and this, in turn, increases your resistance to illness.

Massage also speeds up healing. Bone-marrow transplant patients who were given massages had better neurological function than those who weren't. Furthermore, massage reduced pain by 37% in patients with chronic muscle aches.

Giving someone a massage may be as good as getting one. A study conducted by the University of Miami found that mothers suffering from depression felt better after massaging their infants. In that same study, elderly volunteers who massaged infants reported feeling less anxious and depressed.

It even works when you do it yourself; 43% of headache sufferers reported getting relief after massaging their temples and neck and smokers who were taught self-massage while trying to quit felt less anxiety and smoked less.

Read the following passage then choose the best answer to each question below.

It weighed about 10,000 tons, entered the atmosphere at a speed of 64,000 km/h, and exploded over a city with a blast of 500 kilotons. But on 15 February 2013, we were lucky. The meteorite that showered pieces of rock over Chelyabinsk, Russia, was relatively small, at only about 17 meters wide. Although many people were injured by falling glass, the damage was nothing compared to what had happened in Siberia nearly one hundred years ago. Another relatively small object (approximately 50 meters in diameter) exploded in mid-air over a forest region, flattening about 80 million trees. If it had exploded over a city such as Moscow or London, millions of people would have been killed.

By a strange coincidence, the same day that the meteorite terrified the people of Chelyabinsk, another 50m-wide asteroid passed relatively close to Earth. Scientists were expecting that visit and know that the asteroid will return to fly close by us in 2046, but the Russian meteorite earlier in the day had been too small for anyone to spot.

Most scientists agree that comets and asteroids pose the biggest natural threat to human existence. It was probably a large asteroid or comet colliding with Earth which wiped out the dinosaurs about 65 million years ago. An enormous object, 10 to 16 km in diameter, struck the Yucatan region of Mexico with the force of 100 megatons. That is the equivalent of one Hiroshima bomb for every person alive on Earth today. Many scientists, including the late Stephen Hawking, say that any comet or asteroid greater than 20 km in diameter that hits Earth will result in the complete destruction of complex life, including all animals and most plants. As we have seen, even a much smaller asteroid can cause great damage.

The Earth has been kept fairly safe for the last 65 million years by good fortune and the massive gravitational field of the planet Jupiter. Our cosmic guardian, with its stable circular orbit far from the sun, sweeps up and scatters away most of the dangerous comets and asteroids which might cross Earth’s orbit. After the Chelyabinsk meteorite, scientists are now monitoring potential hazards even more carefully but, as far as they know, there is no danger in the foreseeable future.
