School boat festival

Elena

Our class heard about the school boat festival in our science class. Our teacher explained that we had to make several different boats so we could learn what makes boats float on water. First, my group made a sailing boat, but when we sailed it in the school swimming pool, it sank because there were holes in the wood! So, we decided to make a boat from old plastic bottles and that didn't sink under the water!

Astrid

The boats our class built for the school boat festival were amazing. Our technology teacher showed us a video about how boats and ships are built. Then she told us to make a model of a ship using wood, plastic and metal. After that, we had to make a short film that explained how we made our model of a ship. Then we took our models to the local park and sailed them on the lake.

Kumiko

We were really excited and stopped talking when the headteacher told us about the school boat festival at our whole school morning meeting. We decided to make a model of a Viking longboat and give it to our English teacher because her husband is Danish and she's leaving at the end of the school year to go and work in his country. We didn't want to sail it on the river in case it sank!

Celismar Guzman - a young swimming champion

If you look at 8-year-old Celismar Guzman, she doesn't look strong at all. That is until you see her in the water, Guzman has already won a gold medal in the National Swimming Competition. And, no, that 8 is not a mistake. She is E-I-G-H-T!

Guzman started swimming as a hobby, like all her friends. She has been swimming for only 18 months, but she's already been named National Swimming Champion in her age group in her country. She believes that she can do everything she wants to do in the world of swimming. It's already her life.

Her swimming coach, Morag Betz, explained that Guzman, known as Celi, didn't start as a champion. She had to practice a lot to get here.

A few months ago she also took part in the Junior Olympics and she improved her time by 4 seconds. She came home with four gold medals and one silver medal. "I did really well in all the races," she said. "Now I am second in the whole United States for my age group."

She also says, "I am pleased with everything I have done. Both of my parents were athletes. Sport is what my family does." So what comes next for this 8-year-old winner in the water? "I want to win in the next Olympics," she said.

Better ways to travel

Millions of us use our cars every day to get to work, college or school. Travelling by car is fast and comfortable, but not  for the world around us. So what should we do? One possibility is to car journeys. If you have neighbours who need to travel to the same as you, why not go together in one car? Two or three people travelling together is a more intelligent idea than two or three cars the same journey with only one person in each car.

Of course, cars are not the only way to travel. It's usually possible to travel by bus, tram or train, in a town or city. And if your journey is short, what about walking or going by bike? You'll get fit and money too!

We (0) are all having a great time camping in the forest. My class has got best place on the campsite, with a great view of the mountains.

Last night, rained really hard. Lots of people got wet, I was lucky my new tent stayed dry all night! I'm really glad we decided to buy it. It's much better my old one.

By the way, I forgot tell the football coach that I'm away the moment. Can you let him know that I can't come to practice this week?

Thanks!
