“I want to go camping like you and Dad did a few weeks ago,” Betsy said to her older sister Amy. “I will like it.”

“I am not so sure, Betsy,” Amy explained. “You need to be older, and you have to be brave in the forest. I think that wild animals will scare you.” This made Betsy angry. If her sister could do it, she could, too! She wanted to show Amy that she was brave.

Amy, we can ask mom if we can camp out tonight in the yard behind our house. I can show you that I can stay out there the whole night and not be scared.”

“That is a good idea, Betsy. And when you get scared, I will be there to take care of you!” Amy said. Betsy wanted to show that Amy was wrong.

That night, Betsy and Amy were in a tent behind their house. They used two small flashlights to read books to each other. Amy tried to scare her sister, but Betsy was not scared.

Suddenly, Betsy saw a dark shadow covering the side of the tent. She smiled because she knew that the shadow belonged to their cat, Max. Betsy turned to Amy, and Amy's eyes were wide open. Amy shouted, "Wild animal! Wild animal!" Max burst into their tent, happy to see the children. Betsy was happy, too. She showed that she was not afraid to go camping.

Read the following e-mail then choose the best answer to each question below.

Dear Mr. Stevens,

I'm proud to tell you that I've finally finished my essay for the city contest. I feel really satisfied with it. I was just about to submit it when I saw that I'm required to turn in a copy that's been graded by an English teacher. Since you recommended the contest to me, I was hoping that you'd be willing to take a look at the essay. The essay wasn't written specifically for your class, but I know you'll give me useful feedback. It's not very long and I'd really appreciate it.

If you don't think you have time to do it, do you have any recommendations for a teacher that might? The contest rules aren't specific. They simply say that the essay has to be graded by an English teacher teaching in the Waring school system. I just moved to Waring at the start of this year, so I don't know any teachers besides you. I think my old teachers would be happy to grade it, but they don't work in Waring. Plus, I'm not in contact with them anymore.

I'd be happy to e-mail you my essay or print out a copy and give it to you at school. I understand that you're busy, but hope that you can help me out. I'd really like to enter this contest. Thank you.

Sincerely,
Jessica

Why did Jessica write this e-mail?

  • To be friendly with her teacher
  • To win a very important contest
  • To get her essay graded by a teacher
  • To ask for her teacher's health

Why couldn't Jessica send an e-mail to other teachers to ask for help?

  • Because Mr. Stevens was the only one she knew in Waring.
  • Because her essay was written while she was in Waring.
  • Because she changed school early this year to Waring.

Read the passage and choose the correct answer.

SPACE HOLIDAY

Are you thinking of going on holiday in space? Well, you may not be able to go to the Moon, but you could consider a space tour! This kind of ‘holiday’ allows people to stay in space in a space station. Of course, it’s very expensive and you’d have to be a millionaire to afford it!

First of all, it costs 30 million dollars! Secondly, there’s a pretty long waiting list - there are no free places for some years. Finally, you have to be very fit and healthy and do a lot of training to prepare yourself before you can go on this kind of holiday.

So, why do people want to travel in space? Well, the answer seems to be the excitement and the fun of seeing Earth from above. Astronauts have described the view of Earth from space as absolutely breathtaking. Also, if you have enough to go on this kind of holiday, imagine the stories you’ll be able to tell your friends.

If you’re feeling a bit down about not being able to be a space tourist, there is some hope for you in the future. Some people are now looking into the ideas of space hotels. Some Japanese designs look very exciting. If they are built, they will offer all the things you expect in a hotel. It will be interesting to see what they will be like.

For now, you will have to forget space holidays unless you are rich. I don’t know about you, but I’m going to visit a nice beach and relax in the sun. Maybe if I stay late, I can imagine I’m on the Moon as well!
