Read the following passage and choose the best answer for each blank.

Air pollution, or dirty air, is by many things. Great clouds of smoke come from factory chimneys. Cars send smoke and fumes into the air. Burning waste fills the air bits of dirt. Even burning leaves add smoke to the air. The smoke of all kinds is bad to breathe and can great harm to the body. countries have made laws to limit the amount of fumes cars can exhaust into the air. They also set limits on pollution from power plants and factories. scientists have not yet been able to stop air pollution, they have found ways to make cars and factories burn fuel more cleanly. People are also more careful than they were. For example, they have stopped burning fallen leaves in the autumn. We still have a long way to go. But if we all work together, we can the problem.

Read the following passage and choose the correct answer to each of the questions.

Water scarcity is fast becoming one of the major factors that limit world crop production. In many areas, poor farming methods have led to increasing desertification and the loss of earlier arable lands. Consequently, those plant species that are well adapted to survival in dry climates are being looked at for an answer in developing more efficient crops to grow on slightly arable lands.

Plants use several mechanisms to ensure their survival in desert environments. Some involve simply mechanical and physical adaptations, such as the shape of the plant's surface, smaller leaf size, and extensive root systems. Some of the adaptations are related to chemical mechanisms. Many plants, such as cacti, can retain water because of their inside gums and mucilage. Another chemical mechanism is that of the epicuticular wax layer. This wax layer acts as a waterproof cover to protect the plant. It prevents excessive loss of internal moisture. It also protects the plant from external aggression, which can come from inorganic sources such as gases, or organic sources which include bacteria and plant pests.

Researchers have proposed that synthetic waxes with similar protective abilities could be prepared based on knowledge of desert plants. If successfully developed, such a compound could be used to greatly increase a plant's ability to maintain health in such adverse situations as inadequate water supply, limited fertilizer availability, attack by pests, and poor storage after harvesting.

This passage deals mainly with _____.

  • desertification
  • developing efficient plants
  • factors limiting crop production
  • decreasing water supply

The word “arable” in the first paragraph is closest in meaning to _____.

  • barren
  • marshy
  • fertile
  • parched

Which of the following is a mechanical or physical mechanism that desert plants use?

  • The small root system
  • The vast leaf size
  • The high water system
  • The plant's shape

The word “extensive” in the second paragraph is closest in meaning to _____.

  • advanced
  • shallow
  • widespread
  • spongy

The word "It" in the second paragraph refers to _____.

  • another chemical mechanism
  • the epicuticular wax layer
  • an impervious plant like cover
  • the loss of internal moisture

Which is one of the ways in which the epicuticular wax protects the plant?

  • It guards against bacteria.
  • It helps the plant to avoid excessive moisture intake.
  • It releases gases against plant pests.
  • It helps the plant to attack aggressors.

It can be inferred that synthetic waxes _____.

  • have yielded a high harvest
  • have no waterproof function
  • have not been developed yet
  • have the quality of causing bacteria

What is NOT a disadvantage for crops mentioned in the last paragraph?

  • lack of sunlight
  • inadequate water
  • insufficient fertilize
  • pest aggression
