POSTCARDS
Many people receive picture postcards nowadays of places their friends and family have visited. They first became popular in the 1890s. Until then it was only rich who took holidays but at that time, because of the opening of the railways, ordinary people decided to go to the seaside too. Photographers realized that people wanted to take home a picture their holiday so they started to photographs for sale in seaside towns. And they sold 30 million of them.
Today, those old photographs give us very clear idea of what holidays were like over a hundred years ago.
