Read the following passage and choose the correct answer to each of the following questions.

The sea has always interested people. From it, they can get food, minerals, and treasures. For thousands of years, they sailed on the sea. But they could not go far beneath its surface. People want to explore deep into the sea. However, they are not fishes. Because people must breathe air, they cannot stay under the water’s surface for any length of time. To explore deep water, men and women face even more dangers and problems. A diver who wants to stay underwater for more than a few minutes must breathe air or a special mixture of gases. Divers can wear diving suits and have air pumped to them from above. They can carry tanks of air on their back and breathe through a hose and a mouthpiece. Water weighs 800 times as much as air. Tons of water push against a diver deep in the sea. The diver’s body is under great pressure. When divers are under great pressure, their blood takes in some of the gases they breathe. As they rise too quickly, the gases in their blood form bubbles. Divers then suffer from the bends. The bends can cause divers to double up in pain. Bends can even kill divers.

What is the passage mainly about?

  • the problems a diver faces in deep sea.
  • special mixtures of gases in deep sea.
  • a kind of illness that man suffers in the sea.
  • air pressure under the surface of sea water.

The story does not say so, but it makes you think that _____.

  • deep-sea divers should be in good health
  • diving under the water too quickly causes the bends
  • Divers can wear diving suits to avoid the bends
  • divers explore the deep seas only for treasure

Why do divers get the bends?

  • They come to the surface too quickly.
  • They try to do exercises under the water.
  • Their diving suits weigh too much.
  • Their blood takes some of the gases they breathe.

  • combination
  • division
  • component

The word “them” refers to _____.

HAPPY FAMILY?

My house must be the in the neighbourhood. We are always falling out about what we are going to watch on the television. My sister likes to see her favourite singers and actors talking about themselves so she prefers watching shows. My brother doesn't like anything serious in life. He just wants to laugh all the time so he watches . My parents believe that TV should be educational so they say that we should watch documentaries. From the moment the television is turned on, everybody starts shouting. It's impossible to a solution we're all happy with. Sometimes, it makes me feel so depressed! However for the past month, this has all changed. This is because the whole family has been watching the holiday programmes. Now we are arguing about which holiday we want to visit! We can't agree on anything. How can the same family have so many different personalities?
