  There are so many natural attractions in my country, for example, the best one, in my opinion, is Huangshan Mountain, which earns a high reputation for its magnificent natural scenery. Besides, I travel to the Inner Mongolian grasslands every year to see the vast grassland as well as the blue sky and the white cloud which can be rarely seen in Beijing.

• What is your favorite kind of weather?
  I personally love it when the weather is a bit chilly since winter fashion is my favorite and I really enjoy layering clothes. I also find the brisk breeze very pleasant.

• Do you like visiting natural places?
  Yes, I am fond of getting close to nature. Once I am free, I’d like to visit one of the forest parks around Beijing. These places are not only really perfect for physical activities, but also can help me let off steam.

About two years ago when I was still studying at school we went on a field trip to a local natural reserve. It was situated pretty far from the city so we had to rent a bus to get there.

Even though attendance wasn’t mandatory almost all of my classmates turned up – they were so excited to see the famous cliffs and the abundant wildlife the reserve had to offer.

We spent almost the entire day hiking, climbing up the steep hills, and taking pictures of various birds and rodents there. It was a nice change from our regular classroom activities. The teacher imparted some wisdom to us about the local wildlife variety.

What made the trip stuck in my mind was the perfect combination of fresh air, gentle summer sun, and pleasant physical exertion. After coming back I felt fresh and well-rested despite having walked over 20 miles on that day.

• What is the importance of nature in human life?
  The first reason of nature being important is biodiversity – the number of different species existing and coexisting. This is a very delicately balanced system where animals and plants are interdependent. For instance, a common result of deforestation is the loss of habitat for many animals who have no choice but to migrate to other areas, creating an excessive presence of certain species there. This triggers backlash and nature tries to balance itself, sometimes at the expense of humans. One example is thousands of fish jumping out of the sea onto the shore, displaced by oil spills and consequently leaving bigger species who rely on it as food hungry.

• Has society’s attitude to nature changed over the years?
  It definitely has – mostly thanks to the media coverage of the issue. They show us heart-rending pictures of orphaned polar bears – such imagery is a very powerful tool. Many documentaries set out to depict the scale of the problem we have on our hands. Thankfully it did have an effect and people have become more environmentally-conscious. On the flip side however one particular movement has been on the rise – one that denies climate change. These people state that climate and mean temperatures are cyclical and change all the time over the periods of hundreds of years. The bottom line here is that people are no longer indifferent to the issue, and that is what really counts.

• Do you believe that humanity will be able to coexist with nature peacefully in the future?
  To address this question we have to take a look at the current trend of human-nature relationships. We’ve been systematically destroying the environment over the past 150 years and only recently have we realised the extent of harm we are causing. If we focus on mitigating the damage we have done nature might be saved, and yes, in this case peaceful coexistence is possible. However, if the situation gets out of hand and we go back to our old ways of production which disregard the environment, then the definition of ‘nature’ might change itself. Consequently, it will turn into a different kind of question.
  
  
• Some say that almost all emissions come from industries rather than people. Do you agree or disagree?
• Why is it important to protect the natural environment?

• What causes environmental problems?
  I suppose environmental issues result from many things but mainly from human activities. They clear forests for farming and housing, and this leaves negative impacts on the environment as well as habitats of wildlife. Besides, the rising levels of CO2 due to industrial activities also lead to global warming.

• Would you like to work in a company related to environmental protection?
  Yes, I would even go further to say that most if not all companies should consider their impacts on the environment. I don’t think that companies that specialise in environmental protection can be the silver bullet to our problems.

• Are there any environmental problems in your country?
  Yes, like other nations, my country is experiencing several issues in terms of the environment. The most serious problem might be poor air quality. If you have to commute in the early morning, you would face smog, which makes it difficult to see. And this polluted air is really harmful to our health. Besides, climate change is also another environmental issue.  

• Do you or your family take steps to help the environment?
• Have you ever participated in any environmental events?
• How can we protect the environment?

Now, I would like to talk about a serious environmental problem currently occurring in Hanoi. That is air pollution.

Pollution is a problem all over the world but with developing countries like Vietnam, the situation will probably be more severe, particularly in the air. In the political and economic center of the whole country, it is obvious that people everywhere are gathering into one place to seek jobs. As a result, an increasing amount of traffic and industries produce carbon monoxide and exhaust fumes so the air is visibly contaminated.

This has been a problem over the last few decades and continues to get worse. Recently, the air quality is so contaminated that the sales of air purifiers increase significantly. I think people in Hanoi are aware of the effect of air pollution, it not only affects the aesthetic appeal of the city but also impacts people’s health since breathing in the polluted air can cause respiratory problems such as asthma. I cling to a belief that if we don’t take this into account seriously, it can be extremely detrimental. In the worst scenario, the hole in the ozone layer will be widened. Therefore, I hope that in the future, fewer people will resort to private cars and more people will use public transportation.

• In which way do people damage our planet?
  Human beings have triggered a number of environmental problems during the last several decades. By dumping waste indiscriminately, they cause water pollution that occurs in many places. In addition to that, the constructions of numerous factories and the intensity of vehicles contaminate air, which leads to air pollution. Also, humans damage our planet through their small habits. For example, people nowadays usually use disposable items like disposable plastic containers or spoons instead of recycled ones, which adverselyaffects the environment.

• Why should people be concerned about the environment?
  People should be very concerned about their natural environment because it is the environment that keeps them alive and healthy. Without protecting their natural environment, people won’t be able to breathe fresh air and drink fresh water. Besides, once the environment is damaged, plants and wildlife become negatively affected which will ultimately degrade our living on earth. And when that happens, the all-important biodiversity on this earth is lost. Finally, if people fail to take care of their natural environment, the sea level will rise, because of global warming, which means that many low-lying countries would submerge under the sea.

• What’s the difference between the old and the young as regards environmental protection?
  From my perspective, the elderly appear to be more aware and concerned about environmental protection, whereas the young are quite self-obsessed nowadays. They are way more concerned with their social media apps than with environmental issues. But it’s a totally different story when it comes to their older counterparts. Older people often lead litter-picking groups or clean beaches of plastic waste. Some younger people may do these things as well, but the majority are too self-absorbed to make a difference.

• Do you think large companies and business organizations should be more environmentally friendly? Why? How?
• What technological innovations should the world develop to protect the environment?
• What can the government in your country do to deal with those problems?
